A large round of layoffs has been announced by Sony, affecting about 900 employees worldwide, or roughly 8% of the PlayStation workforce.

Many PlayStation studios are impacted by the layoffs, including Firesprite, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Insomniac, and—most importantly—the London studio. Sony announced the cancellation of many in-development titles in addition to the layoffs.

Jim Ryan, the departing CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, provided an update on what he described as a “tough day at our company” in a blog post.

Subject to local legislation and consultation procedures, we have made the very difficult decision to announce our proposal to begin a reduction of our entire headcount internationally by approximately 8%, or about 900 people,” Ryan stated. “Employees across the globe, including our studios, are impacted.”

” The industry has undergone significant transformation, thus in order to position the company for the future, we must prepare for it now. “

These extraordinarily gifted individuals have contributed to our success, and we are tremendously appreciative of them. But, the sector has undergone significant transformation, therefore in order to position the company for the future, we must get future-ready.

In order to meet the demands of both developers and players while also advancing gaming technology in the future, we took a step back to make sure we were prepared to keep providing the community with the greatest gaming experiences.

PlayStation fans should rest easy knowing that “our plans for reorganizing and streamlining are so we can continue to deliver the best gaming experiences possible,” according to an email that Ryan sent out to workers this morning.

Ryan informed the workforce via email that “tough decisions have become inevitable” and that all SIE regions’ personnel would be impacted, including many PlayStation Studios.

Workers in the United States will find out today if they still have jobs. In the UK, Sony has suggested closing the PlayStation London Studio, which produced VR games in the past, completely due to labor laws requiring a consultation procedure before mass layoffs.

Although Ryan did not confirm this in his email, it appears like London Studio’s PlayStation 5 cooperative game, which takes place in a futuristic London, has been canceled.

In addition, Ryan disclosed layoffs at Firesprite, a fellow UK studio developing a new narrative game. That game’s current state is unknown. Ryan also disclosed layoffs affecting a number of SIE UK functions.

Ryan stated, “The proposed changes mean that before any final decisions are taken, we will enter a period of collective consultation.” The following measures will be sent to every employee participating in the collective consultation today.

“To those departing SIE: We extend our sincere gratitude and respect for all of your contributions throughout your time here.

“For those who will be staying at SIE: During this process, we will have to say goodbye to friends and coworkers who we will always appreciate. It will be difficult. It will be crucial for you to be resilient, sensitive, and adaptable in the upcoming days, weeks, and months.

“I know this will have an effect on wellbeing, and it won’t be easy. Support will be provided to affected workers, including severance pay. Even if these are difficult times, our business, our brand, or our industry are still strong. Our objective is to stay flexible and nimble while keeping our attention on providing the greatest gaming experiences both today and in the future.

“I appreciate your patience at this trying time. Please show kindness to one another and to yourself.

After examining our studios and portfolio and assessing projects at different phases of production, we have determined that certain projects will not proceed.

Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios, verified in a different blog post that the layoffs affect the teams at Sony’s U.S.-based Technology, Creative, and Support as well as Insomniac, the creator of Spider-Man, and Naughty Dog, the developer of The Last of Us. Guerrilla, the developer of Horizon, is also impacted.

Hulst did not identify the games that had been canceled but did state that they had as part of a “re-evaluation of how we operate”. “We looked at our studios and our portfolio, evaluating projects in various stages of development, and have decided that some of those projects will not move forward,” Hulst stated.

To be clear, the choice to halt development on these initiatives has nothing to do with the skill or enthusiasm of the team members. We have always encouraged innovative exploration. Great concepts don’t always translate into amazing games. There are instances when a project is launched with the greatest of intentions, only to have the plan changed due to changes in the market or industry.”

Leaked documents claim that Sony has demanded staff reductions at all of its first-party studios. There have been layoffs at Dreams developer Media Molecule, huge cuts at Bungie, the developer of Destiny, and previous layoffs at Naughty Dog, the developer of The Last of Us.

The Sony layoffs coincide with one of the worst times in the history of the gaming industry, as the sector will experience widespread layoffs in 2023 and 2024. Microsoft let off a staggering 1,900 employees from its video game division last month as a result of Activision Blizzard, the company that owns Call of Duty, for $69 billion. In an attempt to determine what was triggering these layoffs, IGN recently spoke with developers about them.

Sony acknowledged earlier this month that PS5 sales during the pivotal holiday quarter had fallen short of projections. Despite extensive advertising, sales of PS5s fell short of expectations, prompting

Sony to cut its initial target of 25 million units sold during the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2024. Even though Sony sold 8.2 million PS5s in the third quarter that ended on December 31, 2023, compared to 7.1 million in the same period the year before, they fell short of Sony’s ambitious goal.

Sony has also stated that it will not release any significant games from the current PlayStation franchise before April 2025, meaning that significant God of War and Spider-Man sequels are unlikely to happen anytime soon.
