The good news for video game players is that Microsoft will no longer require you to play certain games on Microsoft devices.

Microsoft is ready to take Xbox everywhere.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Tom Warren of The Verge says that the business is scheduled to make an announcement on Thursday regarding the availability of several titles that had only been available on Microsoft’s Xbox console on competing systems from Sony and Nintendo.

I’m going to assume that Warren’s reporting is accurate. However, I believe that this is more of a white flag than a seismic shift—Microsoft is acknowledging that it lost the console wars a long time ago.

A brief synopsis of the console video game industry: Exclusive video game titles are frequently owned or licensed by video game hardware manufacturers. Only PlayStation is home to the most recent Spider-Man game. Nintendo Switch exclusive is Mario Kart. Xbox exclusive is Halo. The concept is that a gamer will only need to purchase a certain device for one or more games to justify their purchase.

Microsoft’s issue is that Xbox, which is stuck in third position with little realistic chance of moving up, has failed to capitalize on this strategy, while it has worked for its rivals. Therefore, it is clear from the announcement that some Xbox-exclusive titles will no longer be exclusive that Microsoft is reconsidering a course of action that it has invested a lot of time and resources in.

I’ve contacted Microsoft PR for an answer. It’s important to emphasize Microsoft’s continued passion for video games, as evidenced by the $70 billion acquisition of Activision, the massive publisher of games like Candy Crush and Call of Duty.

The crucial disclaimer, though, is that Microsoft has already been departing from its strategy of bundling software and hardware: for a number of years, it has been offering Game Pass subscriptions, which are essentially Netflix for video games and bundle a number of Xbox-owned titles with those from other developers. Game Pass is compatible with PCs and Xbox systems. It is $10 per month at first.

The premise behind that is also straightforward: rather than attempting to “own the living room” with the Xbox, Microsoft planned to leverage its gaming division as a services company, charging customers for any device they possessed. This move was made after years of development.

When Apple TV+ was introduced in 2019 and simultaneously made the service available on competing devices like Rokus and Samsung TVs, the company began doing the same thing. (It’s also important to remember that Microsoft had to make a number of promises to authorities in order to have the Activision transaction approved, including that it wouldn’t lock up the new games it was purchasing and make them Xbox-only.)

Although Microsoft would love to see Game Pass available on competing devices from Sony and Nintendo, a move that could really shake up the gaming industry, that seems incredibly unlikely because those businesses have no reason to cannibalize their own software sales in order to help Microsoft make money.

It’s possible that Microsoft will reveal new hardware plans concurrently with the software update, as Warren suggests. However, it’s difficult to see how the games themselves will amount to much beyond Microsoft acquiescing to reality.
